fixed the issue. Will look into that further The difference is that in java a protected member can be accessed from the same package. In C++ there is no equivalence for package level visibility in java.

Why we should not use protected static in java

This might help you It's more a stylistic thing than a direct problem. It suggests that you haven't properly thought through what is going on with the class.
Think about what static means:
code :
public class Program {
    public static void main (String[] args) throws java.lang.Exception {
        System.out.println(new Test2().getTest());
        Test.test = "changed";
        System.out.println(new Test2().getTest());

abstract class Test {
    protected static String test = "test";

class Test2 extends Test {
    public String getTest() {
        return test;

What is the difference between protected internal static and internal static in C#?

I think the issue was by ths following , protected means that it can also be accessed from derived classes.
In your case, since the class itself is internal, you cannot have derived classes outside the project, so it doesn't add anything to internal.

What is the difference with 'protected' and 'protected-static' variables?

seems to work fine The static keyword means that variable belongs to the class itself instead of the objects of said class. You could replace your call to x.b with ClassA.b. Since ClassB extends ClassA, all protected static variables are accessible for all methods of ClassB at all time.

To fix the issue you can do
On the other hand, static is definitely for users because we cannot override it
