echo $string does not print array elements while string returned by a function

it should still fix some issue How to get this , You can print your expected string is.

I wish did fix the issue. You need to keep it much simpler than this. If you enter a word and are looking to slice it at a specific point, use slicing.
Your criteria: qwerty it should print "qet"

>>> a = "querty"
>>> a[::2]
'qet'
[from start: from end: step]
