it fixes the issue setInterval returns an ID that you can pass to clearInterval to cancel it. When the user clicks, cancel the existing ID and call setInterval again to reset it.

Score Counters and Reset Functions in Vanilla JavaScript Hangman

I wish did fix the issue. Lets start with fixing the random word.
The variable word needs to be accessed by several functions so it need to be defined on a scope outside the current functions. But you want to set it new each time inside the start() function. You can do that by declaring the variable outside of the function where it is now, but set it inside the function. You should also reset the counter here.
code :
//randomly chooses a word from wordList
var word

//choosen word is replaced with
function start() {
    word = wordList[Math.floor(Math.random() * wordList.length)];
    counter = 7;
    document.getElementById("counter").innerHTML = counter;
    for (i = 0; i < word.length; i++) {
        letters[i] = "__";
    }

    document.getElementById("answer").innerHTML = letters.join(" ");
    console.log(word);
}
document.getElementById("counter").innerHTML = counter;

counter--;
console.log(counter);
losses++
document.getElementById("losses").innerHTML = losses;
document.onkeyup = function(event) {
    // don't catch numbers, punctuation, enter, etc.
    if (!(event.which <= 90 && event.which >= 65)) return

How to reset variables to original, vanilla Javascript?

wish helps you I'm making a simple hangman game in vanilla javascript and would like the game to reset after a player losses. Specifically, I'd like to: 1. reset the "guessRemain" variable 2. clear out the "guess" id, so none of the guessed letters are shown 3. choose another random word from the array. , Simply set the variable, so to "reset" guessRemain you'd just type
code :
guessRemain = 10;
document.getElementById("guess").innerHTML = "";

Vanilla Javascript Tabs Won't Close On Click

this one helps. The code you posted had some confusing behaviour (such as the buttons disappearing completely). I removed the line that made buttons disappear, as well two different loops that seemed to conflict with each other regarding the class name of the links.
I edited the code down to something simple that displays the content according to the button clicked, but I suspect I've misunderstood something and you're after something else. Maybe you can clarify what's missing?
code :
function openTab(click, openTab) {
        var i;
        var content;

        var wasOpen = document.getElementById(openTab).style.display === "block";

        content = document.getElementsByClassName("content");
        for (i = 0; i < content.length; i++) {
            content[i].style.display = "none";
        }

        if (wasOpen) return;

        document.getElementById(openTab).style.display = "block";
    }
<div class="tabs">
  <button class="link" onclick="openTab(event, 'About')">About</button>
  <button class="link" onclick="openTab(event, 'Hire')">Why You Should Hire Me</button>
  <button class="link" onclick="openTab(event, 'Contact')">Contact</button>
</div>

<div id="About" class="content" style="display:none">
ABOUT CONTENT
</div>

<div id="Hire" class="content" style="display:none">
HIRE CONTENT
</div>

<div id="Contact" class="content" style="display:none">
CONTACT CONTENT
</div>
var wasOpen = document.getElementById(openTab).style.display === "block";
content = document.getElementsByClassName("content");
for (i = 0; i < content.length; i++) {
    content[i].style.display = "none";
}
if (wasOpen) return;
document.getElementById(openTab).style.display = "block";

Vanilla JavaScript: Disable all key combos whatsoever in an entire website

should help you out I think I'd try blocking the event listeners by the method described here.
code :
window.addEventListener("keydown",  function (e) { e.stopPropagation(); }, true);
window.addEventListener("keyup",    function (e) { e.stopPropagation(); }, true);
window.addEventListener("keypress", function (e) { e.stopPropagation(); }, true);
if (e.ctrlKey) {
  e.stopPropagation();
}
document.querySelectorAll("[accesskey]").forEach(function(el) {
  el.removeAttribute('accesskey');
});

Unable to reset an input Text field using Vanilla Javascript

hop of those help? When you assign the value property to a variable, that's exactly what you're doing. You're simply assigning the value, not creating a reference - either set the entire element to the variable and update the value property, or just update the value property at once:
code :
document.getElementById("textInput").value = "";
var input = document.getElementById("textInput");
input.value = "";
