Hope that helps You're accessing the index of a string, which is a char. For example $var = 'something'; $var[3] = 'e'. Drop the [$i]

I wish this helpful for you I am having an issue with inserting words with special characters into my database. The word seems to get truncated at the special character. , Try this
code :
$db->setAttribute(PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_INIT_COMMAND, "SET NAMES 'utf8'");
$word = utf8_encode('pépite');
$sql = "INSERT INTO keyword(key_name) VALUES(?)";
$stmt = $db->prepare($sql);
$stmt->execute(array($word));

With these it helps Guessing here...but it seems in a numeric context (like, say, if you add a number to the return value), NOW() returns a timestampish-looking number (not a count of seconds!). Like, today it might return 20120409161530.000000. Now...depending on the value of $i, it seems this could easily make for an invalid value. I mean, what if it's 666666? You'd end up with 20120409828196.000000, which makes no sense as a timestamp...and i'm pretty sure that MySQL just turns invalid values to 0.
You may want to consider something like NOW() + INTERVAL $i SECOND, and redefine $i to be the number of seconds (or minutes, days, even years if you like...just change SECOND to whatever you decide on). Your resulting times are less likely to turn out all messed up.

wish of those help You were very close in your thinking. The only thing you were missing was a loop to implement the insert for each '.' found in your string. A for loop is perfect for this, e.g.
code :
void myfunc (std::string& s)
{
    /* loop finding each '.' insert ' ' after (except at end) */
    for (size_t pos = s.find('.');
            pos != std::string::npos;
            pos = s.find('.', pos + 1)) {
        if (pos + 1 != s.length())      /* don't insert ' ' at end of s */
            s.insert (pos + 1, " ");
    }
}
#include <iostream>
#include <string>

void myfunc (std::string& s)
{
    /* loop finding each '.' insert ' ' after (except at end) */
    for (size_t pos = s.find('.');
            pos != std::string::npos;
            pos = s.find('.', pos + 1)) {
        if (pos + 1 != s.length())      /* don't insert ' ' at end of s */
            s.insert (pos + 1, " ");
    }
}

int main (void) {

    std::string s {"look.run.see."};
    std::cout << "original: " << s << '\n';

    myfunc (s);

    std::cout << "modified: " << s << '\n';
}
$ ./bin/stringinsert
original: look.run.see.
modified: look. run. see.

seems to work fine There is a lot of overhead in running an INSERT:
Communication between client and server. Parse the INSERT Open the table, etc. Get next AUTO_INCREMENT value. Check for conflicts, deadlocks, etc. Commit the transaction.

may help you . It less error-prone to use fgets() to get a line of text, and sscanf() to parse the line. This is also a more flexible approach that allows multiple scans of the input line when necessary. Note that fgets() keeps the newline character, if there is room in the buffer. Thus one approach would be to read a line of text, and get the first character and the second character. If both characters are successfully read, and the second character is a \n, then input is as expected.
You should always check the return values from functions which do return a value. This can be used to help validate input. In the code below, if sscanf() does not return 2, then a character (other than the newline) was not entered. If two characters were scanned, the second should be a \n; if it is not, more than one character (not including the newline) was entered by the user. Also note that the return value from fgets() itself is checked for errors; an error here causes the program to terminate with an error message.
