like below fixes the issue The code below may work for you, assuming that the "site", "garden" and "species" columns are of a fixed width.
code :
df <- df %>%
      mutate(site = substr(id, 1, 2),
             garden = substr(id, 3, 5),
             plot = ifelse(substr(id, 6, 9) == "CAGE", substr(id, 6, 9), substr(id, 6, 6)),
             year = ifelse(substr(id, 6, 9) == "CAGE", substr(id, 10, 13), substr(id, 7, 10)),
             species = ifelse(substr(id, 6, 9) == "CAGE", substr(id, 14, 17), substr(id, 11, 14)),
             sampledate = ifelse(substr(id, 6, 9) == "CAGE", substr(id, 18, nchar(id)), substr(id, 15, nchar(id)))) %>%
             separate(sampledate, into = c("m","d","y"), sep = "/") %>%
             mutate(portion = substr(y, 3, nchar(y)),
                    sampledate = as.Date(paste(m, d, substr(y, 1, 2), sep = "-"), format = "%m-%d-%y"),
                    m = NULL,
                    d = NULL,
                    y = NULL)

fixed the issue. Will look into that further i have string for example: , Here's the regex you need:
code :
\{(.*?)\}
$str = "(({FAPAGE15}+500)/{GOGA:V18})";

preg_match_all("/\{(.*?)\}/", $str, $matches);

print_r($matches[1]);
Array
(
    [0] => FAPAGE15
    [1] => GOGA:V18
)

wish of those help Since you have the entire string in memory, you can decide where to split the string first, and then allocate two arrays and copy the parts into them.
One way to find the split location is to run a loop looking for the first letter after seeing a digit:
code :
char *str = "#Test1.10.5TestSubjectXNum1";
size_t splitPos = 0;
int seenDigitFlag = 0;
// Go through the string character by character
while (str[splitPos]) {
    // If we see a digit, set the flag
    seenDigitFlag |= isdigit(str[splitPos]);
    // If after seeing a digit we see a letter, end the loop:
    // we have our split point.
    if (isalpha(str[splitPos]) && seenDigitFlag) {
        break;
    }
    splitPos++;
}
// The rest is simple math: compute the length of the first substring
char *str1 = malloc(splitPos+1);
// Copy the content, and set null terminator
memcpy(str1, str, splitPos);
str1[splitPos] = '\0';
// Compute the length of the second substring
size_t rest = strlen(str)-splitPos;
// We can use `strcpy` instead of `memcpy`
// because the second substring is null-terminated
char *str2 = malloc(rest+1);
strcpy(str2, &str[splitPos]);
printf("'%s' '%s'", str1, str2);

To fix this issue This works. It fills with blanks rather than NAs, but you can change that post-hoc if you prefer. (fill = 'right' only works when splitting on a character vector, not explicit positions.)
code :
maxchar = max(nchar(as.character(df$y)))
tidyr::separate(df, y, into = paste0("y", 1:maxchar), sep = 1:(maxchar - 1))

#    x y1 y2 y3 y4 y5 y6
# 1 X1  0  0  L  0
# 2 X2  0
# 3 X3  0  0  0  1  2  L
# 4 X4  0  1  2  3  L  0
# 5 X5  0  D  0

hop of those help? I have data like this: , With separate from the tidyr package:
code :
library(tidyr)
country_info %>%
  separate(country_data,
           into = sprintf('%s.%s', rep(c('country','player.count'),3), rep(1:3, each=2)))
  country.1 player.count.1 country.2 player.count.2 country.3 player.count.3
1    France              4   Morroco              8     Italy              2
2  Scotland              6    Mexico              2      <NA>           <NA>
3  Scotland              2      <NA>           <NA>      <NA>           <NA>

hop of those help? Use strpbrk() instead of strchr().
