fixed the issue. Will look into that further I have a table with a start and end time like so , Assuming that you have the durationMins column already created
code :
 UPDATE Table_name
 set durationMins = TIME_TO_SEC(TIMEDIFF(stime , etime))/60  AS MinuteDiff

help you fix your problem Here are some simplifications to your query:
The left joins are unnecessary. You can just use join. The group by is unnecessary. In fact, it is misleading, because it suggests that the subquery could return more than one row (which would generate an error). The Student table is unnecessary; you can write the correlation clause directory to takes. Table aliases make the query easier to write and to read.
code :
update studentCopy sc
    set tot_cred = (select sum(c.credits)
                    from takes t join
                         course c
                         on t.course_id = c.course_id
                    where sc.ID = t.ID
                   );
update studentCopy sc
    set tot_cred = (select sum(c.credits)
                    from takes t join
                         course c
                         on t.course_id = c.course_id
                    where sc.ID = t.ID and grade <> 'f'
                   );

This might help you I have a table TABLE: |Column1|Column2| , You don't need SELECT, just put the expression in the UPDATE.
code :
UPDATE yourTable
SET Column1 = CONCAT(Column1, '\n', Column2)

this will help I have a new column in my database and I need fill it up with the value of the same column from one specific row. I want to create a feature "copy to all" , You can do it by nesting the select query:
code :
UPDATE PRODUCTS
SET PRICE = (
  select PRICE from (select PRICE from PRODUCTS where ID = 1) t
);
UPDATE PRODUCTS p CROSS JOIN (
  select PRICE from PRODUCTS where ID = 1
) t
SET p.PRICE = t.PRICE;
Mysql -- UPDATE table SET column = SELECT COUNT(*) FROM ( SELECT * FROM table2 WHERE table2.id = table.id ) ) Impossible

Mysql -- UPDATE table SET column = SELECT COUNT(*) FROM ( SELECT * FROM table2 WHERE table2.id = table.id ) ) Impossible

To fix this issue I have two tables with a lot of rows and I need to maintain "index" informations for each row in the first (table_1). So I wrote a query to not use directly COUNT() [wich is slow, slow, slow]. So I try : , the problem is because table_1 is too far from inner query, use:
Mysql: Put output of select as new column in table

Mysql: Put output of select as new column in table

wish helps you If you really want to do this the answer by @scaisEdge shows you how. But you really shouldn't! To do so would mean to introduce redunancy. That means your database wouldn't properly normalized. As a rule, you do not store data that is the result of a simple operation on one or more columns.
Consider using a VIEW instead.
