When calling a method, when to reference the class, and when to reference the object?

fixed the issue. Will look into that further When the method is static - reference the class.
When the method is not static - the instance.

hop of those help? You can get an error because when you define your Player class, you set the possession field to have type Ball. But in your pass function, you set possession to be NULL:
code :
possession <<- NULL
p = setRefClass('Player', fields = list(name = 'character', possession = 'ANY')
R> p2$receive(p1$pass())
R> p1
Reference class object of class "Player"
Field "name":

Field "possession":
NULL
R> p2

Field "name":
[1] "Beckham"
Field "possession":

hope this fix your issue In the scenario you've shown, there isn't much obvious benefit. However, as a pattern it can be useful in my experience - particularly if the method performs validation.
Guava's Preconditions.checkNotNull method is a great example of this. It means I can write code like this:
code :
public class Player {
    private final String name;

    public Player(String name) {
        this.name = Preconditions.checkNotNull(name);
    }
}
super(Preconditions.checkNotNull(name));

To fix the issue you can do You can either set the methods inside 'Locked' that call 'MagicMath' to static as well as the MagicMath methods that are called or create an instance of MagicMath.
See what static means and when to use it in the words of Microsoft.

will help you All the helper methods in ArrayElement need to be declared in super abstract class Element?
Yes you have to have them in-case your argument to def check method is of type super class.
code :
object ObjectTest {
  def main(args: Array[String]): Unit = {
     val x = new ArrayElement(999).check(new ArrayElement(333))
  }
}

abstract class Element {
    val param : Int
    // def printValue : String // commenting this line throws error below
}
class ArrayElement(override val param : Int) extends Element {
   def check(that: Element)  = {
       this.printValue
       println(that.param)
       println(that.asInstanceOf[ArrayElement].printValue)
  }
  def printValue = "value:" + param
}

hop of those help? Typically when a class has a reference count it is storing the number of copies of that object exist. When you pass an object by reference no copy is made. The compiler could be using a pointer or it could be using the actual object but it is not making a copy so the reference counter does not increase.
