I hope this helps you . If you have the following dependency in your pom.xml then spring-boot will use its own default logging (logback) which is embedded within this dependency (you can check in your IDE on dependency hierarchy tab):
code :
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
    <artifactId>spring-boot-starter</artifactId>
</dependency>
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
    <artifactId>spring-boot-starter</artifactId>
    <!-- Need to exclude spring boot's default logger in order to use log4j -->
    <exclusions>
        <exclusion>
            <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
            <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-logging</artifactId>
        </exclusion>
    </exclusions>
</dependency>

How to have Spring boot use a log4j.xml configuration file?

wish of those help It depends how you set up your classpath. Is the log4j binding to slf4j on your classpath (it won't be if you just use the vanilla spring-boot-starter)? The is a spring-boot-starter-log4j and a sample showing how to use it (in Maven, but Gradle has the same features).
If I were you I'd just use logback.
How do I use an external log4j.xml configuration file using spring boot?

wish help you to fix your issue I know it's been a while, but I just came across this very same problem, so maybe I can help.
First of all, make sure the external file has a different name than the internal log4j.xml. As an example we will name it log4j-tmp.xml. Now in addition to log4j.configuration you just have to define logging.config in your command line:
code :
java -Dlog4j.debug -Dlogging.config=file:/tmp/log4j-tmp.xml -Dlog4j.configuration=file:/tmp/log4j-tmp.xml -jar /tmp/project.jar

Hope this helps how to pass? The only way I can get this to work is to put log4j.xml on the classpath. , Try to put this line into your application.properties:
code :
logging.config=file:log4j.xml
Log4j 2.6 (properties file) with Spring Boot 1.3.5 (gradle) not working

this will help Itseems like I had missed out including the logging config file parameter in application.properties file, because of which the log4j was detected and loaded without any error but not used by spring-boot.
Adding the below line solved the issue.
code :
logging.config= # location of logging config file
Spring (Boot) ignores my log4j.properties file

it fixes the issue I wanted to use logging in my implementation. I've set the log4j.properties to logging in both the console and the file: , I had the same problem, and the follow solution didn't help me...
code :
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
    <artifactId>spring-boot-starter</artifactId>
    <exclusions>
        <exclusion>
            <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
            <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-logging</artifactId>
        </exclusion>
    </exclusions>
</dependency>
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
    <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-log4j</artifactId>
    <version>1.3.8.RELEASE</version>
</dependency>
    <dependency>
        <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
        <artifactId>spring-boot-starter</artifactId>
        <exclusions>
            <exclusion>
                <groupId>ch.qos.logback</groupId>
                <artifactId>logback-classic</artifactId>
            </exclusion>
            <exclusion>
                <groupId>org.slf4j</groupId>
                <artifactId>log4j-over-slf4j</artifactId>
            </exclusion>
        </exclusions>
    </dependency>
    ...
    <dependency>
        <groupId>org.slf4j</groupId>
        <artifactId>slf4j-api</artifactId>
        <version>1.7.25</version>
    </dependency>
    <dependency>
        <groupId>org.slf4j</groupId>
