will be helpful for those in need My Android layout consists of 2 TextView inside a LinearLayout. However, I want the second text view to be align right.
code :
TextView textViewSetsReps = new TextView(this);
    textViewSetsReps.setText("8 x 4");
    textViewSetsReps.setTextSize(16);
    textViewSetsReps.setTextColor(Color.BLACK);
    textViewSetsReps.setPadding(20,0,0,0);
    LinearLayout.LayoutParams params = new LinearLayout.LayoutParams(LinearLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT,LinearLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT,  1.0f);
    textViewSetsReps.setLayoutParams(params);
    textViewSetsReps.setGravity(Gravity.RIGHT);
    ll.addView(textViewSetsReps);

it should still fix some issue Try set width of center column as auto rather define its minimum width,
code :
 #centerCol {
    margin-left: 310px;
    margin-right: 360px;
    height: 100%;
    width: auto;
}
in a css three column setup using the float:left how do I horizontally centre an image inside each column

I wish did fix the issue. Images are by default inline elements, and will as such obey the text-align CSS rule of its parent. Since text-align doesn't work in your case, it must mean that your images are not inline elements anymore. Probaby there is a img { display: block } somewhere in your CSS.
This means that margin: 0 auto should do the trick. The problem is that you are applying that style on the img's container instead of on the img itself.
code :
#column-center {
  width: 420px;
  float: left;
  background: GREEN;
  margin: 0 auto;
}
#column-center {
  width: 420px;
  float: left;
  background: GREEN;
}

#column-center img {
  margin: 0 auto;
}

Any of those help Simple. Use display:table-cell; for both the divs.
What this will do is when the page shrinks or expands, the div will be at the same place and shall take the text to expand or shrink accordingly.

this one helps. Neither is better than the other. They behave differently but can under some conditions produce the same results.
Scenarios when floating one container to the right is great:

To fix the issue you can do My goal is to achieve the following layout with a title (left), figure (right) and progress bar (below). , Try this layout:
code :
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
    android:layout_width="fill_parent"
    android:layout_height="wrap_content"
    android:orientation="vertical">

    <TextView
        android:id="@+id/budget_listItem_title"
        android:layout_width="wrap_content"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content"
        android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
        android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
        android:layout_toLeftOf="@+id/budget_listItem_remaining"
        tools:text="foo bar baz foo bar baz foo bar baz foo bar baz foo bar baz" />

    <TextView
        android:id="@+id/budget_listItem_remaining"
        android:layout_width="50dp"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content"
        android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
        android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
        tools:text="1000" />

    <ProgressBar
        style="@android:style/Widget.ProgressBar.Horizontal"
        android:layout_width="match_parent"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content"
        android:layout_below="@+id/budget_listItem_title"
        android:progress="50" />

</RelativeLayout>
